Coronavirus–Stay at Home Lockdown

I realized that we haven’t blogged recently. So I thought I’d post a quick note.

Sara and I traveled to Thailand again for our anniversary in January, which happened to be as the Coronavirus Epidemic was unfolding.  We returned to Catania safely early in February, virus free. We have been under national stay-at-home orders in Sicily for 49 days now (but who’s counting).  I can’t lie, we are anxious to return to “normal” life as we hope to enter Phase 2 of the lockdown period on May 4th.

During or time in isolation we have been making an effort to stay occupied by getting some projects done around the house.  I’ll recap some of the higlights of our travels in Thailand as well as some of our “adventures” at home in future posts.

For now let me share our beautiful lilacs that are showing off their fragrant blooms

Sailing adventure

Yesterday we enjoyed a beautiful day at sea with Gregorio and Antonella aboard the Sun Odyssey, one of Sicily Sailing Experience sail boats. We took the boat from Catania to Acitrezza. If the weather was better we could have added swimming to the itinerary (which honestly was the only thing missing!!!)

Me, Sara & Victoria with Kendall, Sue & Chad.

They served appetizers with wine late morning. Then Antonella made fresh linguine with mussels for lunch. Fresh ingredients she picked up from the Catania market before we embarked.

Linguine alle cozze

Lots of historical and geological narrative through the day as Greg is both a skilled sea captain and a mountain guide. We learned a lot about Sicily and Catania and Mount Etna.

The sea was beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing day!!

Strada Del Vino di Marsala

We stumbled upon this gem in Marsala back in May. We returned so we could share this with our family before they return to the States.

We ordered appetizers to share…

Bruschetta
Plate of local meats and cheeses
Caponata with swordfish
Caponata
Tuna with caramelized red onions

We all enjoyed these along with …

A great experience! I highly recommend stopping here if you visit Marsala

Another wonderful experience at Gambino Vini

When friends come to visit, Gambino Vini wine tasting is always at the top of our list of not-to-miss experiences!

Sue (Sara’s sister) Kendall & Chad joined us at Gambino for a full wine tasting

We have thoroughly enjoyed every visit to Gambino. We always seem to learn something new as they speak passionately about the wines they produce

We admire the beautiful views as we enjoy tasting the wines and eating the foods that pair beautifully.

This was our second time visiting Gambino with Chad, Sue & Kendall.

Our first visit to “The Sandwich Guy” in Ortigia, Siracusa

While we were in Thailand our friends, Volken and Shila, spoke longingly of their memories of sandwiches in Ortigia when they were in Sicily last year. So,,,,we just had to follow their recommendation and check it out. We’ve always seen the crowd around the shop when we visit Ortigia, but this was our first experience at Caseificio Borderi back in March, 2019

We were not disappointed!!! Everything is delicious. We love their fresh cheeses. This was the first of many visits.

We plan to go again this week while we have family is visiting. 😀👏🏻👏🏻

Thai Cooking Course

Thai Cooking Course was another amazing food experience! We chose the day when the menu included one of our favorite dishes, Spicy Cashew Chicken

We also started the day with a tour of the morning market. Our guide explained a lot of the ingredients as we worked our way through the inner streets of the market.

Volken and Shila experienced the cooking class with us! 😁
