Life In Sicily

My wife, Sara, and I moved from New Hampshire, USA to Sicily in November, 2014.  Every day we spend here is a unique adventure.

I think Sicily is a gem that is often overlooked.  It is an island off the Southwestern tip of mainland Italy, similar in size/area to the state of Massachusetts, USA, where I was born and raised. Sicily is full of multi-cultural influences and is rich in history.  Through the food, architecture, culture and arts you can feel the influence of the Greek, Roman, African, Norman, Arabic, Spanish, and more.

The natural beauty can be seen through amazing beaches; delightful wild flowers; tropical plants and trees; plains and hills filled with wheat fields and aromatic citrus orchards; mountains tiered with vineyards along with fig, walnut, chestnut, and almond trees; breath taking sunrises and sunsets; and the hypnotic view of majestic Mount Etna!

We found a wonderful villa to call our home on the southern slope of Mt. Etna, in the city of Belpasso, CT.  imageWe have been able to observe some of Mt. Etna’s beautiful and awe-inspiring eruptions from the comfort of our balcony.  Sara is addicted to tracking the volcanic activity at http://www.volcanodiscovery.com/etna/news.html, and we have put together our emergency “Go Bag” just in case!

I decided to start writing this blog to share some of our experiences.  Sicily from my point of view.  I hope that you enjoy reading.

With our daughter, Vittoria, at the rim of the Silvestri Crater, Mt, Etna, November, 2015.

We traveled to Sicily with our faithful companion, Leonardo, our 7-year old Old English Sheepdog. He truly loved the adventure, exploring the heights of Mt. Etna; cities such as Roma, Syracuse, Catania, Belpasso, Scaccia, Trapani and Erice; Swimming in the ocean, or in a friend’s pool.

July, 2015, Leonardo invited a homeless dog into our property.  She is a Cirneco dell Etna, a fun-loving little girl who needed a family, and Leonardo welcomed her!  We call her Angelina.  She went from a starving stray to a thriving member of our family!

Our daughter, Vittoria, joined us Fall of 2015.  She has been traveling to work in a Salon in NH, USA for a week each month.  But other than that has been enjoying the Sicilian adventure along with us!

Our dear canine companion, Leonardo, passed away suddenly in December, 2015. We have adopted/rescued other dogs through our time here.

During the 2020 Covid lockdown Vittoria and I were inspired to start a YouTube Channel. (You’ll find a link below.) We wanted to share some of our adventures and experiences in Sicily with our friends and family back in USA.  But, as the channel evolved we have focused on our food adventures! We hope that you will enjoy coming along as we shop at outdoor markets for fresh produce, meats and seafood. Also we will show you some of our favorite foods to prepare at home in our kitchen or on the grill.

We have posted the printed recipes for you if you’d like to prepare them yourself. Recipes From Our Kitchen  We cook farm-to-table as much as possible.  Using ingredients from our 100% organic garden or seasonal ingredients from local organic farmers.

And so the adventure continues ,,,,,
