Ingredients

Watch us prepare these on our YouTube Cooking Adventures

For the meatballs:

  • 500 g (1 lb) ground meat
  • 2 Eggs
  • 70 g (1/4 cup) Bread crumbs
  • 1 clove Garlic, minced
  • 30 g (1 oz) Grated cheese
  • A bunch of Parsley
  • Salt & Pepper
  • Olive oil
  • Flour

Ingredients for the sauce:

  • 1-2 small Onions, diced
  • 5-10 pitted green Olives, chopped
  • 10 g (2 TBSP) Raisins
  • 3 TBSP Tomato paste
  • 400 g (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup red wine vinegar
  • 2 TBSP sugar
  • 2 TBSP slivered almonds
  • Salt & pepper

Preparation

  1. In a bowl combine the meat with the eggs, bread crumbs, garlic, cheese, parsley, salt & pepper. After ingredients are well combined, let it rest for a few minutes.
  2. Form the meat mixture into small round meatballs.

  1. In a large skillet, heat some oil for frying the meatballs. You really only need enough oil to cover the bottom of the skillet. Medium-high heat.
  2. Meanwhile, put some flour in a shallow bowl (maybe 1/4-1/2 c flour). Gently roll the meatballs in the flour to give them an even, light coating of flour.
  1. Fry the meatballs, turning gently to cook evenly, until golden. Remove from pan and put on paper towel to drain excess oil.
  2. In the same pan now add the onion and sauté over medium-high heat. As you sauté the onion you should be loosening some of the browned tidbits from the meatballs. Add the olives, raisins, tomato paste & diced tomatoes. Simmer over medium-low heat until the sauce begins to thicken.
  3. Prepare the sweet/sour element by putting the vinegar in a small bowl or glass and stir in the sugar until it dissolves. Add this to the sauce, stir to combine well. Add the meatballs to the sauce along with the almond slices. Continue to cook for 15 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat. And the meatballs are ready to serve. Enjoy them hot. (They are also delicious as leftovers…just refrigerate after they cool.)
